Why this destination is a must-visit

Calpe: where history, architecture and the Mediterranean meet

Calpe is far more than its golden sandy beaches. It’s a destination where avant, garde architecture meets ancient Roman remains and where a dramatic rock hides stories of pirates and Mediterranean legends.

Here are some of the most fascinating curiosities about this jewel of the Costa Blanca:

Peñón de Ifach: a giant full of surprises

It’s the unmistakable symbol of Calpe, yet it hides details few visitors know:

  • One of Europe’s smallest natural parks. The rock forms part of the smallest Natural Park in the Valencian Community and one of the smallest in Europe, covering just about 45 hectares.
  • A tunnel carved by hand. To reach the summit you must pass through a tunnel that isn’t natural, it was excavated in the early twentieth century to make access to the top easier.
  • A private past. Surprisingly, the rock remained privately owned until 1987, when the Valencian government purchased it to ensure its protection.

The Red Wall: an architectural icon

If you love architecture, you’ve probably seen this striking pink and blue building. It was designed by architect Ricardo Bofill in the 1970s.

  • Arab inspiration. Its design is inspired by the “kasbahs”, the traditional citadels of North Africa.
  • Global fame. It has become one of the most photographed buildings on social media and its aesthetic has inspired creatives and productions around the world.

The Queen’s Baths that never had a queen

Near the promenade you’ll find pools carved directly into the rock that look like Roman baths.

  • The legend. For years people believed they were the private baths of a Moorish queen.
  • The reality. In fact, they were a Roman fish farm from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, used to keep fish fresh or produce garum, the famous Roman fish sauce.

Flamingos in the city centre

In the heart of Calpe lies Las Salinas, a saltwater lagoon surrounded by buildings. It’s the perfect place to spot pink flamingos and migratory birds without leaving the town centre. In the past, the salt harvested here was essential for the local fishing industry.

“Forat de la Mar” and the fight against pirates

Calpe’s old town was built on higher ground for a very good reason: pirate attacks.

  • You can still see remains of the ancient walls and the Torreó de la Peça.
  • The famous Puchalt Street, with steps painted in the colours of the Spanish flag, is now one of the most picturesque and photographed corners of the town.

Did you know?

Calpe is one of the few places where the traditional fish auction still takes place at the fish market. Every afternoon, when the fishing boats return to the harbour, visitors can watch this authentic Mediterranean spectacle for free.

Alicante: sun, sea and the perfect Mediterranean escape

Alicante is a lively Mediterranean city that perfectly balances beach life, culture and a relaxed urban atmosphere. Located on Spain’s Costa Blanca, it enjoys sunshine almost all year round and offers an easy-going vibe that appeals to both families and couples looking for a versatile seaside escape.

Make sure you visit:

  • The Castle of Santa Bárbara, perched on Mount Benacantil with panoramic city and sea views.
  • The Explanada de España, a palm-lined promenade ideal for a leisurely walk.
  • The old town area, with its narrow streets, local bars and traditional feel.
  • The harbour and marina, great for an evening stroll by the sea.
  • The central shopping streets, lively and full of local life.

Beaches we think you’ll like:

  • Postiguet Beach, right next to the city centre and very convenient.
  • San Juan Beach, long, wide and perfect for families.
  • Albufereta Beach, quieter and well connected.
  • Cabo de las Huertas coves, ideal for a more natural setting.

Family-friendly activities:

  • Enjoy a beach day with calm waters and easy access.
  • Take a walk or bike ride along the seafront.
  • Visit parks and open spaces around the city.
  • Ride the lift or walk up to the castle for a fun experience.
  • Explore nearby towns with short and easy trips.

Make sure you try these local delicacies:

  • Rice dishes such as arroz del señoret or arroz a banda.
  • Fresh seafood and Mediterranean fish.
  • Traditional salted fish and local tapas.
  • Local sweets enjoyed with a coffee.

Make the most of your visit and go to...

  • Altea, known for its whitewashed old town and sea views.
  • Elche, home to the famous palm grove, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Villajoyosa, colourful houses and a relaxed coastal atmosphere.
  • Tabarca Island, perfect for a short boat trip and clear waters.
