Why this destination is a must-visit
Curiosities of isla canela
Isla Canela is one of those corners of Huelva, in Andalusia, with a personality quite unlike the rest of the Costa de la Luz. Close to the Portuguese border, it blends a cosmopolitan spirit with a strong seafaring soul.
Here are a few curiosities you may not know:
- Island or peninsula?
Despite its name, Isla Canela is technically a barrier island formed by the sediment deposited by the Guadiana River. It is connected to Ayamonte by a bridge, but its natural shape is the result of the constant interplay between the river and the Atlantic Ocean.
- The phenomenon of the “bajas”
Because of the Atlantic tides, when the sea retreats it can move back hundreds of metres. This reveals the famous “bajas”, temporary sandbanks that appear in the middle of the water. Here you can stroll, sit, sunbathe surrounded by the sea, or even collect coquinas, with the appropriate licence, of course.
- A paradise for kitesurfing
Isla Canela is considered one of the best places in Spain to learn kitesurfing and windsurfing. The reason is simple: its flat landscape, shallow waters and steady, non-gusty winds create safe conditions that few destinations can match.
- La torre canela, a historic sentinel
Isla Canela is not only about beaches. The Torre Canela, a 16th-century watchtower, still stands in the area. It was built to defend the coast from attacks by Barbary pirates who once prowled the mouth of the Guadiana River.
- Portugal just minutes away
Few places offer the chance to enjoy breakfast with ham toast in Spain and, just ten minutes later, savour a pastel de nata in the Portuguese Algarve. Simply cross the Guadiana International Bridge or hop on the ferry from Ayamonte to Vila Real de Santo António.
- Feathered neighbours
Located beside the Marshes of Isla Cristina, the area is a fantastic spot for birdwatching. Depending on the season, you may see pink flamingos, spoonbills and grey herons close to residential areas, especially around the canals surrounding the golf course.
Huelva is a relaxed coastal destination in southern Spain, perfect for travellers who enjoy wide beaches, unspoilt nature and outstanding local cuisine. Located on the Atlantic coast of Andalusia, it offers a slower pace than other Spanish hotspots, making it ideal for families and couples looking to unwind while still enjoying authentic cultural experiences.

- Reina Victoria neighbourhood, known for its unique British-inspired architecture.
