Why this destination is a must-visit
Curiosities of Rocallaura and Vallbona de les Monges
If Rocallaura is a haven of water and silence, Vallbona de les Monges is the spiritual heart of the region. Together, they create a fascinating duo in the Urgell area.
Discover the most surprising curiosities that connect these two neighboring gems:
The Monastery of Vallbona
A female oasis. Unlike Poblet or Santes Creus (home to monks), Vallbona de les Monges is the only female monastery on the Cistercian Route that has remained active for more than 850 years — uninterrupted except during times of war.
A remarkable detail: it served as an educational center for the Catalan nobility.
The Queen Who Chose Vallbona
Inside the monastery church rests Violante of Hungary, wife of King James I the Conqueror.
The extraordinary fact: hers is the only royal tomb of the dynasty that remains intact and has never been desecrated. She chose to be buried here out of deep devotion, granting the monastery a unique status of royal protection.
The Enigma of the “Dome-Belfry”
Look closely at the silhouette of Vallbona Monastery and you’ll notice its striking octagonal dome rising above the transept.
A Gothic jewel of Catalonia, it “miraculously” stands on an earlier Romanesque structure that was never designed to support such weight — a bold architectural feat ahead of its time.
Rocallaura and Its “Water War”
In the early 20th century, Rocallaura’s waters were so famous that real legal disputes broke out over ownership of the springs.
Did you know? The water wasn’t just enjoyed locally — it was bottled and shipped to pharmacies across Spain as a kind of “miracle cure.” The Rocallaura Spa became a luxurious meeting point for the Catalan bourgeoisie, while village life continued peacefully around agriculture.
The Cinema Museum of Vallbona
Few expect to find a Cinema Museum (Josep Maria Queraltó Collection) in such a small and spiritual village. Yet Vallbona de les Monges is home to one of Europe’s most important collections of cameras and cinematic objects.
A fascinating contrast: a 12th-century monastery just steps away from the inventions that gave birth to Hollywood.
