Hotel Don Juan Tossa has everything ready for you to discover and enjoy a true calçotada, one of Catalonia’s most iconic and delicious traditions.
So, what exactly is a calçotada? It’s much more than a meal, it’s a celebration. The star of the show is the calçot, a tender, sweet spring onion grilled over an open flame until perfectly charred on the outside and soft inside. They’re peeled by hand, dipped generously in rich romesco sauce and eaten standing up, often with a bib on and laughter all around. It’s messy, it’s fun and it’s all about sharing great food in a relaxed, festive atmosphere.
The perfect weekend to switch off, share unforgettable moments and eat exceptionally well!
Everything is set so you can simply enjoy:
- The calçotada takes place on Saturday at lunchtime.
- Savor unlimited flame-grilled calçots followed by a full meat show cooking, featuring churrasco, butifarra sausage, pork belly and other freshly prepared specialties.

Why this destination is a must-visit
Tossa de Mar, the Mediterranean gem that captivates at first glance
Tossa de Mar is arguably the most photogenic town on the Costa Brava, yet its history has far more layers than most visitors imagine while searching for the perfect hammock.
Here are some fascinating facts that will make you see the town in a whole new light:
-
Spain’s first “vegan town”, almost. In 1989, Tossa de Mar, on the Costa Brava, became the first town in Spain to officially declare itself anti, bullfighting. Long before bullfighting was banned across Catalonia, Tossa had already taken a stand. It was a pioneering gesture that perfectly reflects the town’s peaceful and respectful spirit.
-
Ava Gardner’s hideaway, and a legendary jealous outburst. In 1950, Pandora and the Flying Dutchman was filmed here. Ava Gardner fell in love with the village, and its evening walks. Rumours of her romance with bullfighter Mario Cabré soon reached Frank Sinatra, who, in a jealous frenzy, flew straight to Tossa with a $10,000 diamond necklace to make his presence known.
Within the walled enclosure, you’ll find a life, size statue of Ava Gardner. It is one of the town’s favourite photo spots, though few realise Sinatra once stood here watching her. -
Marc Chagall’s “Blue Paradise”. Before the war, Tossa became a magnet for artists escaping Nazism and the turmoil across Europe. Painter Marc Chagall was so enchanted by the sea’s light and colour that he named the town Le Paradis Bleu, The Blue Paradise.
Tossa’s Municipal Museum was the first museum of contemporary art in Spain, opening in 1935, and it is home to Chagall’s work The Celestial Violinist. -
A wall that does more than watch the sea. Vila Vella is the only fortified medieval town on the Catalan coast to remain almost completely intact. And here is the curious part, although it may look built to defend against pirates, its towers were actually named after local families, such as the Tower of the Hours and the Tower of Joanàs. What is more, the current lighthouse stands exactly where the abbot’s castle once stood, because Tossa technically belonged to the Monastery of Ripoll, over 100 km away.
-
“Cim i Tomba”, a dish born from necessity. If you are planning to eat well here, seek out Cim i Tomba. It is much more than simply a fish dish, it is the recipe fishermen created for long days at sea. They carried a charcoal stove on the boat and cooked the fish damaged in the nets with potatoes, onions and plenty of garlic. The final touch was all,i,oli added at the very end, creating a rich, velvety sauce that is now one of the great stars of local cuisine.
-
A slice of Hollywood on the Costa Brava. Tossa was never just Ava Gardner. The town has served as the backdrop for dozens of films. Its light is so distinctive that cinematographers refer to it as “the light of Tossa”. As you wander through its narrow streets, remember that you are walking through a setting that has appeared in every kind of film, from historical dramas to modern thrillers.
-
Our local expert tip. To escape the crowds and enjoy a truly postcard, perfect view, head up to the lighthouse at night. The path is lit, the noise fades away, and all that remains is the sound of the sea brushing against the foot of the walls. Pure magic.
