Why this destination is a must-visit
Curiosities of Costa Ballena and Rota
Costa Ballena and Rota hide stories and traditions that make the destination even more special.
-
Why is it called Costa Ballena? Local legend says that an old whale travelled the world looking for the most beautiful place to rest… and chose this very coastline.
-
Nearby, in Chipiona, nature takes centre stage. This area is one of the few remaining habitats of the common chameleon in Spain, earning it the nickname of the chameleon’s kingdom.
-
Rota is also known for its strong agricultural roots. Its inhabitants, called mayetos, are famous for their vegetable gardens. Don’t leave without tasting the Arranque Roteño, a local dish related to salmorejo, or sampling the well-known Moscatel wine.
-
When the tide goes out, you can spot the impressive fishing corrals, ancient stone structures of Roman and medieval origin used for natural fishing. Today, they are recognised as a Natural Monument.
-
And finally, the sunsets. Many say that the golden-sand sunsets of this part of Cádiz are among the most spectacular in the entire peninsula.
Cádiz: history, sea and Andalusian flavour in every corner
