Why this destination is a must-visit
Lloret de Mar: What the guidebooks don't tell you (and you should know)
If you think that Lloret de Mar is just party and beach, get ready to change your mind. This corner of the Costa Brava has a fascinating history of fortunes, pirates and movie gardens that will make you see your destination with different eyes.
Here are the most curious facts to enjoy your stay like an expert:
- The village of the "Indianos" (The millionaires who returned). At the end of the 19th century, many young people from Lloret went to "make the Americas" (especially to Cuba). Those who returned rich, known as Indianos, transformed the town.
Almost all the elegant buildings you see (including the Town Hall or the Modernist Cemetery) were financed with that fortune.
Don't miss: The Modernist Cemetery. It's not gloomy, it's an open-air art gallery with pantheons designed by Gaudí's disciples.
- Santa Clotilde: The garden that looks like the Italian Renaissance. If you're looking for the perfect photo op, head to the Santa Clotilde Gardens. They are located on a cliff with spectacular views of the sea. The curious thing is that they have no colorful flowers; the design is based exclusively on the green of the vegetation, the statues of mermaids and the blue of the Mediterranean.
Many, many scenes have been filmed here, including the prequel to Game of Thrones (The House of the Dragon).
- El Castillo d'en Plaja: The "fake" historic castle It is the icon of all postcards of Lloret, but it has a trick:
The reality: it's not a medieval castle. It was a private house built by an industrialist (Narcís Plaja) that was completed in 1940.
The controversy: At the time, the neighbors were horrified because it broke the aesthetics, but today no one imagines the beach of Lloret without its silhouette watching the sea.
- Doña Marinera and the wish of the sailors At one end of the main beach is the statue of the Dona Marinera.
The legend: They say that if you look at the horizon (like her) and at the same time touch her right foot with your hand, you will be granted a wish. Look at the foot, it's shiny from people touching it so much!
-
The "swimming pool" of the Romans Near Lloret, at the site of Els Ametllers (in Tossa, but closely linked), it was discovered that the Romans already summered here 2,000 years ago.
-
A Civil War bunker in the middle of the beach In the area of Sa Caleta, under the castle, there are hidden Civil War defenses.
-
A tip for your stay: If you want to escape the crowds, look for the Camino de Ronda. It is the path along the cliffs. If you walk 15-20 minutes to the north or south, you will find coves of turquoise water where it seems that time has stopped.
