Why this destination is a must-visit
Vila Nova de Gaia, opposite the city of Porto and on the banks of the Douro River, is a destination full of flavor, history and postcard landscapes. Ideal for strolling, enjoying the gastronomy and living the authentic spirit of the north of Portugal.
What to visit?
Gaia is known for its famous Port wine cellars, such as Taylor's, Graham's or Cockburn's, where you can do tastings and discover the elaboration process. The Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar offers breathtaking views of the city and the river. And if you want a different experience, go up the Gaia Cable Car to see the Douro from the heights. Do you know the Half Rabbit? It is the most famous piece of urban art in Vila Nova de Gaia. A colorful rabbit occupying the corner of a building: half of it is made with recycled equipment s and the other half is painted with bright colors. Perfect for a photo! We recommend you go early or at the end of the day to avoid crowds.
What to do?
Stroll along the lively Cais de Gaia, ideal for watching the sunset by the river. Cross the Don Luis I Bridge and explore Porto's Ribeira or relax in the green Jardim do Morro.
What to eat?
Don't leave without trying the typical bacalao con natas (cod with cream) or enjoy a meal overlooking the Douro in one of the riverside restaurants. There are options for all tastes, from traditional proposals to modern cuisine with local touches.
Our recommendation:
End the day with a sunset stroll along the banks of the Douro, a wine tasting at a winery and dinner with a view. Gaia combines the best of Porto's wine, history and beauty in one place.
