Why this destination is a must-visit

Cabárceno Nature Park

  • Forget what you know about zoos, Cabárceno is something entirely different. Tucked into the rolling green hills of Cantabria, this vast natural park lets animals roam as freely as possible while visitors explore by car, foot, or from the sky in panoramic cable cars.

  • You don’t walk through Cabárceno. You discover it. One moment you're watching giraffes graze under the sun, the next a group of baboons darts across the rocks. Turn a corner and suddenly, there’s a bear soaking in a pond like it's his private spa. It feels more like you’re inside a nature documentary than on a holiday in Spain.

  • The park is surprisingly relaxing, even with kids in tow. There’s room to breathe, places to picnic, and no pressure to rush. Just let the day unfold. Ride the cable car above the lion habitat, share stories over a packed lunch with mountain views, and enjoy the rare feeling of being somewhere truly unique.

  • And if you still have energy, Santander is just a short drive away, perfect for a seafood dinner on the waterfront.

Chances are, you’ll leave Cabárceno with your camera full and your heart a little fuller, too.

Nestled in the lush Toranzo Valley in Cantabria, the small village of Alceda is the perfect spot for a peaceful escape into nature. Known for its thermal waters and centennial park, it offers the ideal combination of relaxation, family-friendly activities, and proximity to exciting attractions.

Make sure you visit:

  • Alceda Park, a serene botanical garden filled with exotic trees and shaded paths.
  • The historical Alceda thermal spa, with mineral-rich waters known since the 18th century.
  • The banks of the Pas River, perfect for quiet walks or a relaxing picnic.
  • Traditional stone houses and rural architecture throughout the village.

Beaches we think you’ll like:

  • Somo Beach (45 minutes away): wide and lively, great for surfing or sunbathing.
  • Galizano Beach (50 min): smaller, quiet and ideal for a family day out.
  • Langre Beach (under 1h): a stunning cliff-lined beach popular with locals.

Family-Friendly activities:

  • Enjoy a relaxed day in Alceda Park with picnic spots and playgrounds.
  • Rent bikes and follow the Pas Greenway—a safe and scenic cycling route.
  • Spend a full day at Cabárceno Nature Park (30 min away), one of Spain’s top wildlife parks.
  • Visit Puente Viesgo's caves for a fascinating look into prehistoric life.

Make sure you try these local delicacies:

  • Mountain stew ("cocido montañés"): a hearty Cantabrian favourite.
  • “Sobaos” and “quesadas”, sweet pastries typical of the Pas Valley.
  • Local goat cheese and artisan cured meats from nearby villages.
  • Trout from the Pas River, served grilled or in stews.

Make the most of your visit:

  • Puente Viesgo (15 min): famous for its spa and ancient cave paintings.
  • Villacarriedo (10 min): a picturesque town with traditional charm and great dining options.
  • Cabárceno Nature Park (30 min): explore wildlife in a semi-natural environment.
  • Santander (45 min): combine a coastal city trip with culture and cuisine.

7.7 Judith Travelled with couple October 2025 "The room was very nice and the views and the location of the spa were very beautiful. The staff was very friendly."
la habitación era muy bonita y las vistas y donde estaba el balneario era muy bonito. El personal muy amable
When booking at this spa, you should take into account that it does not include access to the spa but includes access to outdoor pools. If you go in winter, it can be very cold when you get out, and the water temperature is not very high. In our case, it wasn't very cold outside, but it was quite chilly, and the outdoor pool was dirty. On the other hand, the mattress in the room was too soft. The shower water temperature was not well controlled. Also, for breakfast, you should know that it is fixed, and if you want something else, you have to request it separately. I think they should change the menus for lunch and dinner, but overall, it's a good place to unwind for a few days.

5.6 Raquel Travelled with couple October 2025 I would highlight the hotel's location, as it is within a beautiful natural environment.
Resaltaría la ubicación del hotel, ya que está dentro de un entorno natural precioso.
I am aware that I paid a pretty good price, but I don't think it's right that they give you only one breakfast option because not everyone has the same tastes. I would also add that since they serve ham, a sad slice of packaged ham is quite ridiculous in my opinion. On the other hand, the offer included a bath at the spa but they assign you a schedule without asking, and of course, in my case, at 11:30 it ruined all my plans for visits, and when I tried to change it they said everything was fully booked, so I couldn't do it in the end. It's also not normal for them to play very loud music in the middle of dinner. They told us it was because of the Imserso guests, but what about the other customers? Normally, music is played in separate rooms or at most after dinner, not during it. Additionally, the music was of all kinds, not at all suitable for Imserso guests but rather to the waitress's liking.
