Destination

The Mar Menor is a coastal saltwater lagoon located in the Region of Murcia in south-eastern Spain. Known for its calm, shallow waters and high mineral content, it's often described as Europe's largest open-air spa. A favourite with families, water sports enthusiasts and wellness seekers, the Mar Menor offers a unique blend of relaxation, nature and outdoor fun.

Top attractions

  • Infanta Cristina High Performance Centre: A renowned training facility for elite athletes, especially those involved in water sports such as sailing and rowing.
  • San Pedro del Pinatar Salt Flats: A beautiful natural park, ideal for birdwatching, especially flamingos, and for walking or cycling among salt flats and dunes.
  • La Manga Marina: A lively harbour area with restaurants, shops and boat hire, perfect for a lunch by the sea or a drink at sunset.
  • Mud baths at Lo Pagán: The area's natural mud is believed to have therapeutic properties for the skin and joints - fun and free to try!
  • Roman ruins of Cartagena (30 mins away): Explore ancient Roman theatres and archaeological museums in one of Spain's most historic cities.

Best Beaches in Murcia

  • Los Narejos Beach: One of the most popular beaches on the Mar Menor - shallow, calm waters and excellent facilities, perfect for families.
  • Playa de la Puntica (Lo Pagán): A family-friendly beach with fine sand, beach bars and pedal boat hire.
  • Playa de las Palmeras: Known for its natural beauty and warm, safe waters, ideal for young children.
  • Playa de La Manga (Mediterranean side): Just across the strip from the lagoon, offering bigger waves and a change of scenery.
  • Playa de Santiago de la Ribera: A quiet, local beach with clean waters and a relaxed atmosphere.

Family Friendly Activities

  • Safe swimming everywhere: The lagoon's warm, shallow waters make it one of the safest places for children to swim in Spain.
  • Water sports galore: Try sailing, paddle boarding, windsurfing or kayaking - many schools offer beginners' tuition.
  • Walk or cycle along the promenade: Many towns around the Mar Menor have well-maintained promenades.
  • Mini golf and playgrounds: Can be found in towns such as Los Alcázares and La Manga.
  • Boat trips on the Mar Menor: A fun way to explore the area from the water, often with stops for a swim.

Local Gastronomy

  • Caldero del Mar Menor: A traditional rice dish cooked in fish stock, usually served with alioli - simple but full of flavour.
  • Marineras: A local tapa of Russian salad on a breadstick with anchovies - a Murcian favourite.
  • Grilled fish and seafood: Freshly caught from the lagoon and the nearby Mediterranean.
  • Pastel de Cierva: A unique Murcian pastry with sweet dough and a savoury chicken filling.
  • Local Wines and Beers: Try Murcia's regional wines and craft beers, often served in local beach bars and chiringuitos.

The service, the location, the rooms were excelent.
The food needs to have some changes of different style.
Excellent
8.9 Clarissa June 2024
The staff were great. The room upgrade was great. The food at dinner was lovely, hot and varied. Housekeeping every day. Not too overcrowded around the pool, although we werent there at a busy time.
Our room was a family room with a kitchenette, but there was nothing in it - there was an explanation about why, but it was a shame. Breakfast was a bit boring - I know a lot of people say this, but I felt there could have been a scope for a bigger variety.
Very good
9 Joao Travelled with couple August 2023
The room given was spacious, clean and comfortable altough the bed could have a more rigid mattress for me. We took the full board and were surprised by the good quality and variety offered at the buffet. Drinks also served at really affordable prices. Friendly staff. It was a good experience overall regardless of the amount of families around.
The cons were the beach (not the best one for me but can be great for kids) and the swimming pool that was too small and dominated by children playing, obviously due to holiday season.
Excellent
3.4 Maria Travelled with couple August 2025 The food at the buffet is quite good and close to the beach.
Fifth floor rooms with old and poorly maintained rooms. No air conditioning and poorly regulated, small and uncomfortable beds. Nothing to do with the photos of the rooms advertised on the website. I had to spend 3 days asking for an extra pillow as they wouldn't give it to me. For a 4-day stay, they leave you with 3 soap packets that don't even reach one leg and you have to keep asking for more. The cleanliness leaves much to be desired as they hardly sweep and only make the bed. It is close to the beach, but the beach there is very dirty and full of algae and dirt, and the smell is almost unbearable.

10 Julia Travelled with family August 2025 The stay has been great but if I have to highlight something, it's the attention of the animation girls at the mini club. My daughter wanted to spend the whole day with them, she had a great time. A big kiss to Angela, Marta, Mayca, and Estela from Elsa.

8.9 Angel Travelled with family August 2025 Close to the beach, the restaurant staff, cleanliness, miniclub, and very well-cooked food.
To say something. Some days he got a little confused when entering the dining room, and sometimes it took a bit to replace a dish, but because they were very good.

7.7 Elena Travelled with couple August 2025 "When we arrived at the hotel we loved the reception. The staff was super nice, especially Miss Puri. She gave us a spa voucher. A lovely woman. I must point out that we didn't like the room at all. We were given one in the attic and we had 10 air conditioning units next to us making a noise as if we had an airplane turbine in the bathroom window, apart from the heat they emitted. The buffet-style food was of poor quality, all frozen or canned (like the Murcian ratatouille, terrible from a can). We were very surprised considering we were , located in Mar Menor (Murcia), . The room cleaning was superficial. They didn't even sweep since there was still sand from the beach and a full trash can that they didn't even clean. The best thing about this hotel is its location as it is just a few metres from the beach and the area of bars and restaurants."
The variety of food and that it is more homemade. A lot of fried and breaded.
Mucho frito y rebozado.

7.4 Stefana Travelled with family August 2025 We have enjoyed the pool as the nearest Palmeras beach is full of algae and you had to avoid them to enter the Mar Menor water. The food is delicious and the cocktails at the cafeteria are very good. For families with children, Half Board or Full Board includes a snack from 5 to 6, this is appreciated!
The restaurant waiters should know what drinks they have available because two of them couldn't tell me at the time if they had red fruit tonic, which is served at the bar. Maybe they should consider having two shifts for lunch and dinner because there is a line at lunchtime and you have to wait for some people to finish eating so others can enter. It wouldn't be a bad idea to add an extra swimming pool and more hammocks because there are few of them.
