Accommodation

Destination

Calafell is a family-friendly beach town located in the province of Tarragona on the Costa Dorada. Just over an hour from Barcelona, the town is renowned for its long sandy beaches, tranquil Mediterranean waters and rich cultural heritage. With its relaxed atmosphere, historic sites, and beachfront promenade, Calafell is an ideal destination for relaxation, family fun, and exploring Catalan traditions.

Top attractions

  • Castell de la Santa Creu de Calafell: a restored medieval castle on a hilltop offering views of the town and sea, with interactive exhibits about local history.
  • Ciutadella Ibèrica: This reconstructed Iberian settlement offers a fascinating insight into pre-Roman life in the area and provides guided tours and family workshops.
  • Calafell Old Town: Explore the narrow streets, traditional houses, quiet plazas, small cafés and local shops.
  • Casa Barral Museum: Once the home of the poet Carlos Barral, this museum explores literature, the sea, and the town’s fishing heritage.
  • La Confraria: A beautifully restored fish auction building which is now used for cultural events.

Best beaches in Calafell Costa Daurada

  • Playa de Calafell: A wide, golden-sand beach with calm, shallow waters — perfect for families with young children.
  • Playa de Segur de Calafell: Located just north of Calafell, this beach is quieter and more spacious. It offers sunbeds, water sports and a relaxed vibe.
  • Playa de L’Estany – Mas Mel: A slightly more secluded beach, great for swimming, walking and avoiding crowds.
  • Accessible beaches: Calafell’s main beach has ramps, adapted bathrooms and shaded rest areas.

Family-friendly activities

  • Mini golf and pedal boats: These fun options are located right on the seafront promenade.
  • Playgrounds on the beach: Located at several points along the shore, they make it easy to combine beach time and playtime.
  • Calafell Slide (seasonal): A summer toboggan ride down a hillside — a local favourite for children and teenagers.
  • Train rides: A mini tourist train offers families a fun way to see the town and coastline.

Local gastronomy

  • Arrossejat: A local fisherman's dish of noodles or rice cooked in fish broth and served with alioli.
  • Fideuà is similar to paella, but made with short noodles and a variety of seafood.
  • Suquet de peix: A traditional Catalan fish stew that’s rich and flavourful.
  • Tapas by the sea: Beachfront restaurants serve classic dishes such as patatas bravas, calamari, and grilled sardines.
  • Crema catalana: The famous Catalan custard dessert with a caramelised sugar topping.
  • Wines from Penedès: This nearby wine region produces excellent white wines and sparkling cavas, which are often available in local restaurants.

Day trips and nearby attractions

  • Tarragona (30 minutes): Visit Roman amphitheatres, aqueducts and medieval streets in this historic coastal city.
  • Barcelona (1 hour): Easily reachable by train for a day of culture, shopping and sightseeing.
  • Vilanova i la Geltrú (20 minutes): A lovely seaside town with a marina, museums, and peaceful beaches.
  • Sitges (30 minutes): Known for its art scene, lively promenade and upscale vibe.
  • Penedès Wine Route: Explore vineyards and cava producers just inland from the coast.

La cercanía con la playa
The receptionist lady was not very friendly. The new girl was very good. The accommodation was very dirty, very noisy, they didn't respect the quiet hours and in general, you could hear even the neighbors' breathing, the pipes were absolutely noisy, I do not recommend it at all.

6 Alba Travelled with family March 2024 "In the apartments, it was stated that rest hours should be respected, yet, during the first three nights, those in the adjacent rooms were having parties that did not end until 5 in the morning. Also, on the second night, there was a theft and a fight that ended at 6 in the morning."

It's as if the whole apartment is super outdated, everything old and obsolete, everything creaks, doors, faucets, windows, etc. The reception staff is super rude, I really do not recommend this place at all, we were robbed in the apartment, so a complete disaster.

6.8 Joana Travelled with family September 2023 I found it quite bad that there is little time available for check-in, apart from that, one of the people who attended me was somewhat unpleasant.

2.8 Maria Josefa Travelled with family September 2023 The proximity to the beach
La cercanía a la playa
The cleaning was terrible, with mold and hairs in the bathtub drain, the building very old with window frames from the 70s, cockroaches, mosquitoes. They could install mosquito nets on the windows. We couldn't sleep. Also, the 3 days and 2 nights offer is reduced to 2 nights because the check-in on the first day is at 4 pm and the check-out on the last day is at 10 in the morning.
No pudimos dormir.

8 Mari Carmen Travelled with family September 2023 I love how close it is to all essential services. In the month of September, car park on the street is free. The nearby bakery is very friendly. And the restaurants on the corner are very good and friendly. Also, the pool is large although there is no space to sunbathe. The beach is very close. The kitchenware, the pans are rather. A little bad. Bring one from home. Otherwise, for 4 people, very good, quite complete for a few days. The washing machine works very well and the drying area is very appropriate. On balance, the positive outweighs the quality-price ratio.
They are apartments a bit old but quality price is not bad. I went in September maybe in a heatwave it would have been overwhelming since there is no air conditioning. Only one fan. Loose pans. The pool people if they speak loudly it echoes a lot. I think it's terrible that we check in at 4pm and check out at 10am in the morning, a full day is lost. That should be changed, especially since the apartment was ready because with an extra 20€ we got it.

6 Soco Travelled with couple August 2023 It is next to Segur beach, and it has a supermarket next to it.
Cleanliness, especially in the kitchen. It smelled bad, and the stove area was dirty. We missed basic cleaning and hygiene products and toilet paper (there is only one).
