Nestled between the Mediterranean Sea and the Sierra Almijara mountains, Nerja is renowned for its stunning beaches, dramatic cliffs and charming old town, offering a perfect balance of nature, culture and relaxation.

Top Attractions

  • Balcón de Europa: A picturesque promenade and viewpoint built on a cliff overlooking the coast and mountains - the heart of Nerja.
  • Nerja Caves (Cuevas de Nerja): One of Spain's most spectacular natural attractions, with vast underground chambers, prehistoric cave paintings and cave concerts.
  • Church of El Salvador: A beautiful 17th century church in the town centre, combining Baroque and Mudejar styles.
  • Aqueduct of the Eagle (Acueducto del Águila): A 19th century structure that still stands proudly among the fields near the caves.
  • Nerja Museum: Located near the Balcón de Europa, it offers an insight into local history and the discovery of the caves.

Best beaches in Nerja

  • Playa Burriana: Nerja's most popular beach, with sun loungers, restaurants, water sports and beach volleyball - great for families and groups.
  • Playa Calahonda: A small postcard beach just below the Balcón de Europa, with dramatic cliffs and clear waters.
  • Playa de Maro: Just outside Nerja, this unspoilt beach is surrounded by farmland and natural beauty, perfect for kayaking and snorkelling.
  • El Playazo: A long, relaxed beach to the west of the town, less crowded and ideal for relaxing days on the beach.
  • Playa Carabeo: A quiet cove accessed by steps from the old town - ideal for a peaceful swim in turquoise waters.

Family Friendly Activities

  • Take a stroll along the Paseo Marítimo: Safe and scenic, perfect for a family stroll with playgrounds, ice-cream stands and sea views.
  • Mini-train tour of Nerja: A fun way to see the highlights of the town with younger children.
  • Nearby Aquaparks (Summer): A short drive away, in towns such as Vélez-Málaga, for a full day of water fun.

Local gastronomy

  • Espetos de sardinas: Grilled sardines cooked over an open fire and served on the beach - a staple of the Costa del Sol.

6.1 Olga Travelled with couple August 2024 The staff was lovely...from the reception, cleaning, and the waiters.
There is NOTHING...in Maro...there is not even an accessible beach...you have to take a shuttle bus to access a cove...there are no shops, only 3 bars...a disaster, a whole day without TV antenna signal, the breakfast buffet is scarce and does not vary a single day...and dinner a menu with few options... but the food was of good quality...lacked variety.

7.1 Sarai Travelled with couple August 2024 They had gluten-free bread and fried potatoes on the side.
The pool and exteriors were not well kept, the water was cloudy and dirty and the surrounding area was not high enough. Not at all as it appears in the photos. Little choice of gluten free desserts.

1 Roberto August 2024 The friendliness of the staff
La amabilidad del personal
We were sent to the building across the street where we couldn't sleep for a few days during a storm because of the noise from the doors. The food is bad. And half of the menu was not available, it is not a buffet. The pool was green, the common areas were neglected, in general everything was terrible.

2.4 Ana Travelled with family August 2024 Very friendly hotel and restaurant employees
Empleados del hotel y restaurante muy simpáticos
It is further from the beach than it says, the half board is very bad, it is better to take only the accommodation. I am allergic to dust and the rooms are not very clean, the parking is very bad to find, there is no option to change the half board to lunch, it has to be dinner.
