Why this destination is a must-visit
Curiosities of San Fernando
San Fernando, affectionately known as "La Isla", is a destination with an extraordinary historical and cultural richness. Discover some of the most fascinating curiosities of this unique city in Cádiz.
The mystery behind its name, from Isla de León to San Fernando
Many believe the city is named after the Holy King, Ferdinand III. In reality, it honors Ferdinand VII.
It was formerly known as Villa de la Real Isla de León, a name linked to the Ponce de León family, its former owners.
In 1813, the Cortes officially renamed it San Fernando to pay tribute to the king and reward the city’s bravery in resisting Napoleon’s troops during the siege.
It is literally an island
Although it may appear to be a peninsula when arriving by car or train, San Fernando is separated from the mainland by the Caño de Sancti Petri. It is connected to the mainland and Cádiz by several bridges, including the historic Zuazo Bridge of Roman origin, the strategic point where the advance of French troops was halted.
The cradle of Spanish democracy
When thinking of the Constitution of 1812, known as "La Pepa", Cádiz often comes to mind. However, the Cortes were first established in San Fernando, specifically at the Real Teatro de las Cortes, on September 24, 1810.
It was here that the first decrees of national sovereignty were drafted before moving to Cádiz due to a yellow fever outbreak.
Time is manufactured here
Did you know that Spain’s official time is determined in San Fernando? The Royal Institute and Observatory of the Navy, founded in the 18th century, is the oldest observatory in Spain and is responsible for maintaining the national time standard, known as UTC-ROA.
The legend of Camarón
San Fernando is the birthplace of Camarón de la Isla, the greatest legend of flamenco. Visit his birthplace on Calle Carmen and explore the interpretation center dedicated to his life and legacy.
As a curious detail, his nickname came from his blond hair and slim figure, which led his uncle to compare him to a shrimp.
