Looking for a place to breathe, slow down and reconnect? This is your ideal hideaway in the north of Portugal.
Why this destination is a must-visit
Caminha is a seaside village in northern Portugal, right where the Minho River meets the Atlantic and borders Galicia. Its well-kept historic center, its quiet atmosphere and the environment of beaches and mountains make it an ideal destination for families and couples looking for relaxation, nature and an authentic spot, without overcrowding.
What to visit?
The heart of the village is in the Praça Conselheiro Silva Torres, full of terraces, with the Torre do Relógio and the Igreja da Misericórdia presiding over the environment. It is worth strolling along the cobblestone streets to the Igreja Matriz and the remains of Caminha's fortified complex, reminders of its defensive past. The riverside promenade offers beautiful views of the Minho estuary and the Forte da Ínsua, on a small island off the coast.
What to do?
You can follow the banks of the Miño on foot or by bike, enjoy nature and birdwatching. Nearby await you at Praia de Moledo and Vila Praia de Âncora, perfect for strolling along the sand, lying in the sun or taking up sports such as surfing. Market days are ideal for mingling with local life and browsing local products.
What to eat?
In Caminha, fish and seafood dishes are a hit: bacalhau à Minhota, seafood rice, polvo à lagareiro and grilled sardines in season are sure bets, always well accompanied by a cool green wine. At the end, nothing like a good coffee with traditional pastries in a downtown pastry shop.
Our recommendation:
O Chafariz restaurant is a very good option to try homemade Portuguese cuisine, with fish and seafood specialties in a simple and cozy atmosphere, perfect for a quiet dinner after a day at the beach or excursion.
Nearby excursions:
Nearby you have Viana do Castelo, with elegant old town and views from the sanctuary of Santa Luzia, and Valença do Minho, famous for its walled fortress and little streets full of stores. Across the Minho, in Galicia, A Guarda and Monte Santa Trega offer spectacular panoramic views over the estuary and the Atlantic, ideal for a day holiday.
